Sophia Si:
Welcome to Science, Music and Society. I'm your host, Sophia Si. When I hear the phrase music heals, I think of the ways music comforts people, especially in trying times. But did you know that music, like medicine, can also treat neurological conditions? It can help restore impaired speech and improve physical agility damaged by strokes or other brain injuries. This past summer, I asked the certified neurologic music therapist, Dr. Kyurim Kang of the Center for Music and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine, to describe music therapy, how it works, and some therapeutic activities that their center offers.
